The Story So Far - Clairvoyant

It’s just so perfect. Parker’s non-yelling voice is absolutely beautiful. This song sounds so innocent and defeated. I could sit here all night and dip into the complex multilayer existence of this song, how it sounds as though he’s been beaten down so far that he can’t even yell about it, but I’d just rather leave it here.

The Story So Far - Empty Space

With the insane success of “Under Soil and Dirt,” TSSF certainly had a lot going against them with the new record. Their fanbase is composed chiefly of the “You’ve changed and now I hate you” crowd, so a strange album that took too many liberties with any of the elements we had fallen in love with could have been catastrophic. The band stepped up and began releasing singles. The first single “Right Here” was reassuring to many (myself included). It sounded as though they had taken the safe route and simply written a sophomore release in the same vein as their debut. Then they dropped “The Glass” and things got interesting. The song was something we hadn’t heard from them. It was, musically, deeper than they’d gone before. Lyrically, it was still Parker, but it seemed as though the band had matured around him. This only heightened (at least for the people I know and follow) the anticipation and curiosity surrounding this album. FINALLY, they released “Empty Space.” It all made perfect sense. This song was the self-aware, super-refined foreshadowing of a truly incredible album to come. The video itself is a pretty standard release as far as pop-punk videos are concerned, but it’s a great visual representation of how they’ve grown and changed.

With Transit having dipped their feet in cement and waded into the deep end of the pool, I’d just like to thank The Story So Far for releasing something so reassuring. “What You Don’t See” proved that Sophomore releases are not always something to be feared in this new crop of talent.

What Fallout Boy just allowed me to stream was not an album. It was not music. It was heart break. It was spit in the face of everyone who thought that with all the rumors of their return and all this talk of “saving” rock and roll, that they might actually turn away from the overproduced self-satisfyingly-pretentious bullshit they had been releasing for a minute there. Nope. Not what happened.

I feel like Patrick had a bunch of songs written to old guitar riffs and he recorded just the vocals. Then, I think they called Katy Perry’s producer, Taio Cruz, the vocalist of Train, and Simon Cowell and they were like “Hey, could you make this album insanely radio-friendly…oh what’s that?….you say you’d have to sacrifice all originality and shit in the face of any sense of musical integrity we had left?….Yeah, why would we object to that?….no no….no we’re totally not opposed to Big Sean rapping on a song to draw in the inner-city teen demo….Oh….Really?…You think having Courtney Love on a song would make it sound like we’d earned some behind-the-scenes uber credit with the rock industry?….oh she’ll do it for forty bucks…Yeah sure, do that…”

This album really hurt to listen to. 16 Year old me reached for a razor.
Ugh.
